About Stephen

Stephen L. Cawelti has been a member of the State Bar of California since 2006, practicing exclusively complex family law matters.  He handles a variety of cases, including divorce, parentage/paternity, 3+ parent cases, child custody/visitation litigation, child and spousal support actions, including payment enforcement proceedings, domestic violence cases, as well as contempt of court hearings. Mr. Cawelti is certified as a Specialist in Family Law by the Board of Legal Specialization of the State Bar of California and has acted as the lead attorney on hundreds of cases and argued before the Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside, San Bernardino and Ventura County Superior Courts, as well as the United States Bankruptcy Court for the Central District of California.


Stephen graduated from Loyola Law School in December 2005 and earned the Lloyd Tevis “Commercial Law Student of the Year” Award.  He was an associate attorney with a highly respected family law firm for over eight years before being named partner of Simpson Cawelti LLP in 2016.  The firm was rated “AV” by Martindale-Hubbell.  The Law Offices of Stephen L. Cawelti, APC was formed in 2018.

Awards & Volunteer Work

SuperLawyers named Stephen a “Rising Star” in 2016 and he was designated as one of Pasadena Magazine’s “Top Attorneys” for 2014 through 2020.  He is active in the Los Angeles County Bar Association, Beverly Hills Bar Association, and Association of Certified Family Law Specialists (ACFLS).  He sits on the Family Law Executive Committee of the Los Angeles County Bar Association (FLEXCOM) and is a member of the Volunteer Mediation Panel for the Pasadena Courthouse.  He also serves in the Temporary Judge Program for the Los Angeles Superior Court, hearing family law and domestic violence cases on a volunteer basis.  He has written a number of articles on family law issues, including domestic violence and complex financial matters.
